Saunders Wants Jacobs If Not Canelo-GGG Winner
While Daniel Jacobs is certain that Billy Joe Saunders wants nothing to do with him, the current WBO middleweight champion claims that if he can’t get Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin, he wants Jacobs next.
Standing in the way for both men are two title fights, for Jacobs its a IBF middleweight title fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko on October 27th, and for Saunders, and October 20th showdown in Boston against Demetrius Andrade.
“Look, if the fight don’t end up taking place between me and the winner of Golovkin and Canelo, I’m not gonna keep, you know, chomping at it and begging for it,” Saunders told BoxingScene.com over the weekend in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
“But if it don’t come to me, I want Danny Jacobs and I’ll go back to America again. You know, Danny Jacobs was the next big thing out there. He was the one who had a great loss against Golovkin and I respect Danny Jacobs. You know, he’s a good fighter. I don’t take nothing away, but I know I’ll get the [better] of him.”
Following Jacobs handling of Maciej Sulecki, the New York boxer said he’d love to fight Saunders, even it meant having the fight in Saunders backyard of the United Kingdom.
“It’s something that I’ve been pushing for a very long time,” Jacobs said in reference to facing Saunders. “But I think he’s been using his promoter [Frank Warren] – I think Eddie and him have a little beef, something like that. I don’t know. I don’t know too much about it.”
Hearn and Warren would stymie their feud to make the deal for Saunders and Andrade, who Hearn signed earlier this summer, but that issue was forced by Andrade being the mandatory challenger for Saunders’ title.
