Savannah Marshall Preps For PFL Debut, Eyes Shields Rematch

Savannah Marshall prepares to make her PFL debut on June 8 against Mirela Vargas at PFL Europe in her hometown of Newcastle.

Marshall switched to MMA after becoming the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion in women’s boxing. Victory over Franchon Crews-Dezurn secured her all the belts. It was the perfect response to her defeat against Claressa Shields, who became undisputed at 160. After the Crews-Dezurn win, Marshall suffered an injury, as she could not fight her WBC mandatory Shadasia Green.

Crews-Dezurn replaced her and won the vacant WBC belt. Marshall then signed a deal with the PFL. A win over Vargas will allow Marshall to pursue a rematch with Shields in MMA. Shields also signed with the PFL, beating Kelsey De Santis on the PFL vs Bellator Champs card. Marshall has been training with the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall, as she set her sights on fighting Shields again.

“It was just the opportunity [from the PFL to fight in MMA] – something I hadn’t considered before. I was supposed to box in March, and the PFL came to me for June 8, along with a potential matchup against Claressa Shields in the cage. That’s what got me excited. … Nothing is promised. It could happen. There is potential there, hopefully. I’m in a Catch-22 – there is no one really for me to fight in boxing aside from rematches with Franchon and Claressa. The PFL opportunity is coming at the perfect time. I can give it a go with PFL and see where it goes,” Marshall said
