Scott: I’ll Be First to Beat ‘King Kong’
While Luis Ortiz has spoken out about beating the top echelon of heavyweight boxers, his next opponent believes he has the tools to upset ‘King Kong’ on Saturday night.
Malik Scott fights Ortiz in Monte-Carlo this weekend. Ortiz, undefeated and feared in the heavyweight division, sees the fight as an opportunity to catapult himself in to the title picture. Not so fast, says Scott. He plans on handing Ortiz his first loss and stealing the spotlight.
Scott says that he chose to fight Ortiz precisely because of the fearsome status of ‘King Kong’. A win over Ortiz gets Scott exactly where he wants him in the division.
“I don’t want people to get the wrong end of the stick – I picked to fight Luis Ortiz,” said Scott, per Boxing News. “People have crowned him as the next king of the Heavyweight division, so that’s the kind of guy I want."
In a sport where many fighters avoid challenges as long as they can to preserve their record, Scott instead heads towards the dangerous match ups. It’s that type of fearlessness that led him into a knockout loss to Deontay Wilder in 2014.
“Is he the most feared? Anyone will fight him but for the right amount of money. He’s a 6ft 4in Cuban southpaw – he’s got a hell of a pedigree, he can fight and he’s dangerous – but that makes me want to fight him. I gravitate to risks like this, because the rewards out there are huge."
Scott rebounded from the loss to Wilder with back-to-back victories against Alex Leapai and Tony Thompson. He will enter Monaco as an underdog, but with the confidence of a fighter that seeks risks rather than run from them.
