Sean O’Malley Retains 135-Pound Title With Dominant Victory Over Marlon Vera At UFC 299

Tonight, in the main event of UFC 299 in Miami, Florida, Sean O’Malley displayed an absolute striking masterclass versus Marlon Vera, retaining his 135-pound title.

Despite a convincing win for O’Malley, “Chito” showed an enormous amount of heart to fight through significant damage inflicted by the champion’s dynamic striking.

Through this victory, O’Malley earned his first title defense as the UFC’s bantamweight champion. Additionally, he redeemed himself for the loss he suffered to Vera back in 2020.

The consistent trend throughout this 25-minute affair was that O’Malley had a glaring speed advantage over Vera. This advantage resulted in the champion registering over double the significant strikes that “Chito” landed.

Furthermore, O’Malley showcased a new level of skill in his striking game. He kept Vera constantly guessing by mixing his actions between kicks and body shots to get his opponent’s hands to drop, then continue to punish the Ecuadorian’s damaged eye with piston like straight lefts behind convincing feints.

On one occasion, “Sugar” even landed a knee straight up the middle that connected flush to the jaw of Vera. The sound of the impact alone was shocking enough, but what really surprised everyone is that “Chito” kept on going, but at this point his level of awareness must have been considerably compromised.

Following the decision being read, O’Malley went on to suggest a fight with the newly crowned featherweight champion Ilia Topuria in his home country of Spain. He also casually expressed that he was open fighting Merab Dvalishvili, who is currently ranked as the 135-pound number-one contender.

Official Result: Sean O’Malley def. Marlon Vera via Decision (Unanimous) – 50-45, 50-45, 50-44
