Security Separate Makhachev And Poirier During Their Face Off

Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier were separated by security during their face-off ahead of their UFC 302 fight on Saturday.

Makhachev makes the third defense of his UFC Lightweight Title. Two wins over Alexander Volkanovski followed up the title win against Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in 2022. Makhachev has enlisted the help of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has been in his training camp and will appear in his corner.

Dustin seeks his first-ever world title, having fallen short against Khabib and Oliveira in those lightweight bouts. The Diamond has suggested that this could be his last fight. He has prepared a special walkout song while admitting he won’t get too many other title shots. During the face-off, Islam and Poirier had to be separated by security after exchanging a war of words.

In chief support, Sean Strickland faces Paulo Costa. Strickland lost his UFC Middleweight Title to Dricus Du Plessis via a split decision in his last bout. While Dana White felt Strickland had done enough to win, Strickland never got the rematch.

Costa lost in his last fight to Robert Whittaker at UFC 298, a blow after defeating Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. Costa alleged that Strickland turned down the fight over a lack of money. Strickland then accused Costa of not signing the contract. The winner could chase a bout with Du Plessis.
