Serrano MMA Return Delayed, Focus Back on Boxing

WBO and interim WBC female featherweight champion Amanda Serrano is now looking for a quick return to boxing after her planned MMA return for this month was scrapped.

Serrano was scheduled to make her MMA return in Puerto Rico at a January 25 Combate Americas event. That card, however, has now been pushed back until later this year.

As a result, the seven-division world champion is looking to get on a boxing card as soon as possible — potentially the Jan. 30 Miami card that features Demetrius Andrade vs. Luke Keeler and Jake Paul vs. AnEsonGib.

According to Jordan Maldonado, the plan is for a quick turnaround so Serrano can face WBO female junior welterweight champion Katie Taylor in a highly-anticipated showdown later this year.

“We are working to include Amanda on a boxing card on January 30 in Miami so that the next fight is against Katie Taylor in April,” said Jordan Maldonado, manager and coach of Serrano.

Earthquakes have rocked the nation in a short amount of time recently, and the conditions played a role in the decision to postpone the event, according to CEO Campbell McLaren.

Serrano and Maldonado, however, claim there was more to behind the scenes than the conditions and earthquakes in the country, and it’s left Serrano upset.

“They threw a bomb at us,” Maldonado said. “The people of Combates America were doing business with a person who, apparently, did not do things well and they need to change the date of the card. The promotion of the event was weak. They want a way to put Amanda on [this month in Miami], but we’re upset. Amanda is super disappointed. She is 31 years old and basically has have achieved everything that can be done.

“We have achieved all the goals. She sacrifices a lot, for her there was no Christmas or New Year. Her participation in Combates America has been canceled and this breaks her heart for the sacrifices that she made. I can’t guarantee that [fans] will see much more of Amanda. If things go well, then we are going to be given those two fights or we will officially talk about the retreat.”
