Shakur Stevenson Needs A Statement Win Against Artem Harutyunyan

Shakur Stevenson has to deliver a statement performance to boost his brand.

Shakur faces Artem Harutyunyan in the first defense of his WBC Lightweight Title. Despite being a three-weight world champion, his stock dropped heavily after winning the vacant WBC belt against Edwin De Los Santos. Stevenson had an injury entering the fight, meaning he was fighting defensively.

De Los Santos also struggled to pin Shakur down, making it a dour spectacle as the crowd booed. Stevenson’s undefeated 21-0 record includes only 10 KO wins. As he enters the final fight of his Top Rank contract, boxing insiders feel Shakur needs a stoppage win to announce himself as an elite boxer.

“Defense is what separates champions. The elite guys don’t get hit. Shakur is one of the best defensive fighters in the game today, and he creates a lot of openings. The issue is he’s not the most exciting fighter at all, which is me being nice. A lot of guys think he’s very boring,” Chris Algieri said

“He’s not only hard to beat but to look good against. That’s why a lot of guys don’t want to fight him. There’s no getting around it. He’s boring. It depends on what your taste is. If you want to see home runs, you stay at home. You’re not watching Stevenson,” Atlas stated
