Shakur Stevenson vs. Artem Harutyunyan Almost Agreed For July 6

Shakur Stevenson is nearing a deal to face Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 in Newark, New Jersey.

The WBC Lightweight Champion wants to bounce back from his last performance against Edwin De Los Santos. Shakur’s stock dropped dramatically based on the nature of the fight. The three-weight world champion fought defensively, getting booed throughout the fight. While he emerged victorious, the big fights against Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis became less likely.

Shakur targeted fights with William Zepeda and Haney. Zepeda called out Shakur after beating Maxi Hughes. Oscar De La Hoya ruled out the fight for now. Stevenson offered himself as a replacement to face Haney if Garcia pulled out. Ryan raised concern over his mental health leading up to the fight.

The fight, however, will likely go ahead, leaving Stevenson looking for alternatives. Harutyunyan’s last bout was a defeat to Frank Martin. The lightweight took a knee in the final round, giving Martin the decision. Since Shakur was targeting the big names, this fight has not gone down well with boxing fans.
