Shawn Porter Breaks Down Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez
WBC Silver Welterweight Champion Shawn Porter has given his take on the upcoming title unification clash between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez.
Lomachenko and Lopez are expected to go one-on-one later this year. Promoter Bob Arum says the working date is October 17. Lomachenko is the WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO Lightweight Champion. Lopez is the IBF Lightweight Champion.
Porter knows all too well what it feels like to be in massive title fights. When speaking to Fight Hub TV, the seasoned veteran gave his assessment of Lomachenko vs. Lopez (via Bad Left Hook).
“That’s gonna be fight of the year. I’m not picking a winner but I’ll break it down, man. I think that Lopez is explosive, I think he’s fast, he’s sharp. I don’t think he’s seen all of it in the ring. And I don’t think he’s biting off more than he can chew, but I do think he might not be all the way ready for a fighter like Lomachenko. But he’s young, he’s vibrant…that’s a dangerous combination.
“I think we know what we’re gonna get from Loma. Loma’s gonna come out and find his rhythm, figure out what’s gonna work, and use it…I think the fight is more complex for Teofimo than it is for Lomachenko.”
Porter went on to say that it wouldn’t surprise him if Lopez pulled off the win. He praised Lopez for being a well-polished up-and-comer. He even shared his belief that Lopez is just a notch above fellow prospect Shakur Stevenson.
Lomachenko’s pro MMA record stands at 14-1. He hasn’t suffered a loss since March 1, 2014 when he dropped a split decision to Orlando Salido. This was just the second pro bout in Lomachenko’s boxing career.
Lopez has been perfect throughout his young professional career. He has amassed an undefeated record of 15-0. He’s coming off a second-round TKO victory over Richard Commey to capture the IBF Lightweight Title.
