Shawn Porter Explains What Makes Devin Haney A ‘Dangerous’ Boxer

Shawn Porter did not hold back while praising WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.

Porter, who is set to challenge welterweight champion Terence Crawford, feels that the 22-year-old has been able to climb to the top at an early age due to timely decisions. He said that Haney’s father, Bill Haney, has helped the boxer set up on a path that will make his future bright.

“[Haney] and his dad have made all the right movements up to this point,” Porter said.

“So when they’re taking on a guy like Maxi Hughes, it means something,” he added. “They haven’t wasted anything at this point. They haven’t wasted time, they haven’t wasted experience, and they haven’t wasted any of their TV time. I feel like they’re handling everything accordingly. So I think they’ll be fine.”

“He’s dangerous because he’s got these combinations,” the two-time former welterweight world champion explained.

Unlike other people who have compared the young champion to Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather, Porter backed Haney to cement his own legacy.

“Just like Roy Jones Jr. had the combination of speed, athleticism, quickness and reflexes that were outmatched,” he said. “I’m not saying that Devin Haney is the next Roy Jones or is Roy Jones. For a long time, people were saying he’s the next Mayweather.”

Haney is currently 26-0 with 15 knockouts. He doesn’t have his next fight set yet.
