Shawn Porter Set To Face Danny Garcia for Interim WBC Belt
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has announced that the sanctioning body is going to order a welterweight interim title fight between Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter. This is assuming Porter beats Thomas Dulrome on August 26 on the under-card to Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s fight in Las Vegas.
Sulaiman understands the predicament and was quoted to say that…
“Yes there is the issue that Porter is going to have a fight in a few days with Dulorme, but if he wins we’re going to order the fight for the interim title with Danny Garcia.”
This decision was reached due to the injury to Keith Thurman, who is out until at least 2018 following elbow surgery, and Errol Spence wanting to face not only Garcia, but Thurman as well in a quest to unify the Welterweight titles.
Danny Garcia is coming off his first defeat where he lost the WBC world title to Thurman in March. Porter, who had already won a final eliminator against Andre Berto to become Thurman’s mandatory challenger in April, will apparently have to win at least one more before getting his second shot at Thurman, who he lost to in 2016, and has been calling for a rematch ever since.
