Shevchenko-Jedrzejcyzk Back On For UFC 231

Now that Derrick Lewis’ “hot” streak has lead him to a UFC heavyweight title fight at UFC 230 against Daniel Cormier, the fight that was originally the main event has been cancelled, as Valentina Shevchenko will face Joanna Jedrzejcyzk will face off at UFC 231.

Last week Shevchenko was slotted in the main event of the UFC’s return to Madison Square Garden, as she would face Sijara Eubanks for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title. The move shocked many in the MMA community as Eubanks had only fought one fight in the UFC following her appearance on The Ultimate Fighter, making to the finale but pulled due to injury.

Now, the fight originally scheduled for UFC 231 in December will remain, as Shevchenko will fight the former strawweight champion on the Toronto card.

It has been another seismic shift for the women’s flyweight division beginning with the crowning of the champion, with Nicco Montano facing replacement opponent Roxanne Modafferi, and then being unable to defend the title until UFC 228, but pulled due to being hospitalized prior to the weigh-ins due to an unhealthy weight cut. The scheduled fight with Shevchenko would be cancelled and see Montano being stripped of the title nearly immediately after.
