Shogun Wants Cormier Next

With #2 ranked light heavyweight Volkan Oezdemir now fighting Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227, Mauricio Rua may still be a fight away from challenging Daniel Cormier.

Rua, who is facing last minute replacement Anthony Smith feels that he is “one step closer” to a fight for the light heavyweight title with a win over Smith.

“Shogun” was listed as one of Cormier’s dream opponents before he retires in 2019, and told The MMA Hour that if he wins in Hamburg, that he could fight Cormier in November.

“But I’m actually not thinking about the belt now because I have a good opponent ahead of me and I can’t think about it. The belt is my dream, of course, but I have to go step by step. I know that I will be closer if I win this fight.”
