Smith Interested In Facing Vargas Over Brook
On his quest to become a world champion once again, Kell Brook has his eyes on specific opponents.
During the most recent episode of “The Lockdown Tapes” podcast, Brook (29-2-1) talked about fights that make sense for him. The former WBO Light-Middleweight Champion specifically wants someone who can help grow his brand. One fight he is interested in, but won’t go out of his way for, is a bout against Kell Brook.
“The Brook fight is a fight I want but I am not going to chase him,” said Smith. “He’s not that good and he hasn’t got a World Title, I want to fight him because he’s a decent name and I think it’s a very good fight for the British fans.”
Smith turned pro in 2008. A former British Light-Middleweight Champion, the 31-year-old beat John Thompson for the WBO Title in 2015. He lost the belt to Canelo Alvarez a year later, ending his undefeated streak. Smith has since gone 6-1 in his last seven, last beating Roberto Garcia back in December via unanimous decision.
Brook (39-2) came back from a hiatus and beat Mark DeLuca this past February. The 33-year-old has had his eyes on Amir Khan but has since turned the fight away due to years of it not getting done. A fight he is interested in is against Terence Crawford. Still, Smith tried making sense of a Brook bout.
“His (Khan’s) resume is unbelievable, but I think he is scared of losing to Brook,” Smith went on to say. “I think it’s similar with Kell that he is scared of losing to me. Too higher risk for a smaller reward for him but I do think there is good money there in that fight. If it isn’t Crawford it should be me and Brook.”
If Brook is out of the picture, Smith has eyes on Jessie Vargas. The 30-year-old Vargas (29-3-2) is a former WBO Welterweight Champion and a WBA Super-Lightweight Champion. He is currently 2-1-2 in his last five fights, losing to Mikey Garcia last time out in February via unanimous decision.
Facing Vargas is something that Smith thinks viewers will be much more interested in.
“The Jessie Vargas fight is the more likely fight for me,” Smith stated. “Brook seems to be playing no part but I think Eddie Hearn should force Brook’s hand if he wants to see the fight. I don’t blame Brook, if he gets the Crawford fight then good luck for him but I think a fight with me will be much more competitive.
“I want to be in a fight that people will be glued to, find entertaining and want to watch. We know Vargas can fight, he’s a two-weight World Champion and it was almost done before Eddie signed Mikey Garcia which then became the obvious fight to make.”
With Smith holding the better record out of all the fighters mentioned (minus Crawford), he is the dealer. With boxing on hold, for now, Smith will have to wait for his chance to shine again. Which fighter will take the bait and face him?
