Smith Signed For Joshua-Miller Undercard

The unified WBA Super, WBC Diamond and Ring Magazine super-middleweight world champion Callum Smith is making his return in a major way, as he’s been signed for the undercard of Anthony Joshua and Jarrell Miller’s June 1st battle at Madison Square Garden.

Smith, who has not fought since defeating George Groves in September in the finals of the World Boxing Super Series, announced thathe will fight an unnamed opponent on the DAZN broadcast on June 1st.

Hearn sees Smith’s second fight in the United States as the beginning of major fights against some of the top middleweights in the sport.

“There’s a lot of chat about the UK and America, but there are some massive fights in America for Callum Smith,” Hearn said. “You’ve got the likes of [Saul] ‘Canelo’ [Alvarez], [Gennady] Golovkin, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Danny Jacobs, so June 1 is all about building that foundation.

“He’s still got the opportunity to fight in the UK on pay-per-view, but the fights that are available for him in America are way beyond even the pay-per-view level fights.”

Fellow U.K. stars Kell Brook, Josh Kelly, and Joshua Buatsi are already announced for the June 1st event, with the potential addition of a lightweight unification fight between unified champion Katie Taylor and WBC champion Delfine Persoon.
