This fight was not Sonny Liston’s first rodeo vs. Floyd Patterson.

On this day in history, July 22, 1963, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Sonny Liston defeated Floyd Patterson for the second time in a first-round KO. Liston retained the heavyweight championship of the world and was seen as “unbeatable.”

The first bout between the two fighters took place in September 1962 at Comiskey Park, Chicago. The first bout ended four seconds earlier than the second bout, the official time was 2:10.

Listen carried his title of No. 1 contender for over two years. Not only did he defeat Patterson, but he also defeated fighters including Cleveland Williams, Zora Folley and Eddie Machen.
