Sor Rungvisai Signs With ONE Championship
While Dana White is still building his Zuffa boxing brand, ONE Championship has signed WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai to fight on their cards.
Sor Rungvisai will make his debut in Bangkok on October 5th at the ONE Kingdom of Heroes event, defending his title against an unnamed opponent.
The entire event will take place inside a ring, not a cage, and feature Sor Rungvisai in the main event.
Before that, Sor Rungvisai will face off with Young Gil Bae, in a ten round tune-up fight on July 21st.
Thainchai Pisitwuttinan of Nakornloung Promotion was at a press conference in Bangkok on Monday afternoon (local time) to promote ONE: ‘Kingdom of Heroes’ He told the media,
“Our work in boxing has always been driven by our passion and love. The best part of it is that we get to give life-turning opportunities to boxers and their families. Each of them has their own stories, but they are all driven by the same dream – to be the world champion. I am glad that our promotion and ONE Championship have coalesced in having a common mission and vision for combat sports athletes around the globe. I just cannot begin to say how massive of an event this will be. History will be made on 6 October.”
WBC regulations state that Sor Rungvisai can face against any super flyweight currently ranked in the top 15 in a title fight.
ONE Championship Chairman Chatri Sityodtong admitted that he is fully aware of the indelible legacies Asian fighters like Manny Pacquiao have made on the sport.
“I consider ONE Championship as the caretaker of every form of martial arts in the world, including boxing. We will make sure that the new generation of boxers in Asia will be fully nurtured. The legacy that Manny Pacquiao and other boxing greats have created must continue. We are reaching out. We shall grow together,”
