Spence Fight Slated For NYC Metro In December Or January

IBF welterweight titleholder Errol Spence Jr. is inching towards his first title defense since winning the belt from Kell Brook in May. According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Spence will make said defense either in December or January.

If Spence is to defend in December it’s most likely to take place at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York. If he fights in January it’ll likely be at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

No opponent as been finalized at this time but there are a couple of frontrunners for the assignment. Word has it that it could either be Lamont Peterson or Luis Collazo who is coming off a knockout win over Sammy Vasquez earlier in 2017.

Although both are capable fighters, neither opponent should be expected to be a real challenge for Spence as each fighter seems to be heading int o the twilight of their career. Peterson will turn 34 in January and Collazo is 36 years old. Also when facing championship opponents, Peterson’s three losses have come against Timothy Bradley Jr., Lucas Matthysse, and Danny Garcia, while Collazo has seven losses with names like Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley, Andre Berto, Amir Khan, and Keith Thurman among them.

The official opponent will likely be finalized soon so we’ll have more information on that front as it becomes available.
