Spence Makes Retirement Admission

Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) has admitted he came close to walking away from boxing following his ninth-round stoppage loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023, but says the extended time away from the sport has left him feeling physically and mentally ready for his comeback against Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) on July 25.

The Crawford defeat ended Spence’s undefeated record as he missed out on becoming the undisputed welterweight champion, having previously captured titles against Kell Brook, Shawn Porter and Yordenis Ugas to become a unified champion. Spence was open about where his head was at.

“Definitely, there were thoughts of retirement, but I feel rejuvenated. That long layoff has definitely helped me physically, it has definitely helped me mentally, and I am ready to show everybody what I have got left,” Spence

Spence is well aware of the scepticism surrounding his comeback and is using it as motivation. A win over Tszyu takes him one step closer to becoming a two-weight champion, as he makes his debut at 154, with a win putting him in the conversation for a future title shot.

“A lot of people will be saying ‘oh, he is going to be a shell of himself’ or ‘he can’t come back’, but they always say that. Eye injury, they said the same thing. Car crash, they said the same thing. They are going to continue saying the same thing and they are just adding fuel to my fire,” Spence added
