Spencer Focused On Becoming A Contender At UFC Norfolk
With no clear featherweight challenger for Amanda Nunes, Felicia Spencer is hoping to put her name in the hat once again.
Spencer (7-1) faces off against Zarah Fairn dos Santos this Saturday at UFC Norfolk. Co-headlining the card, it is her first fight since losing to Cris Cybrog back at UFC 240 in July. It ended up being former Flyweight Champion Cyborg’s last bout with the UFC.
At one point she was the rising star in the promotion. Now, Spencer is looking to get back to being talked about when it comes to Bantamweight and Featherweight Champion Nunes’ next opponent. A win against dos Santos can definitely do the trick.
“It’s crossed my mind that Amanda could be next,” Spencer stated to MMAJunkie. “I know she has a lot of pull, so we’ll see what she wants to do and we’ll have to think about that after Saturday. I feel like I’m ready to jump in a big fight again.”
Spencer won the Invicta FC Featherweight Title back in 2018 against Pam Sorenson. She had a taste of gold before giving it up to sign with the UFC. She beat former Invicta champion Megan Anderson in her debut before the Cyborg bout. Now, she faces Zarah Fairn dos Santos (6-3), who is 3-2 in her last five. She lost a bout to Megan Anderson back in October in her UFC debut, and is looking for her own way back.
Another featherweight bout is on the card, with Megan Anderson facing Norma Dumont Viana. It is rare for the UFC to give this much attention to the featherweight division. With Nunes showing interest in defending her 145-pound belt, Spencer sees this as a sign.
“It’s kind of a building division, it shows that they’re putting their best foot forward trying to promote it and make it a little more exciting,” Spencer went on to say. “I feel like whoever shows up and looks the best on Saturday will probably get that offer.
“It seems that way, but no one at the UFC has mentioned anything like that, but I think it’s a cool way to promote the division,” Spencer continued. “It makes the card a little more exciting, it’s something a little bit unusual, just the fact that there are two fights in the featherweight division that are on it – and this has never happened before.”
UFC Norfolk takes place inside the Chartway Center. The main event is Joseph Benavidez v. Deiveson Figueiredo for the vacant UFC Flyweight Championship.
