Spence’s Career On The Line Against Tszyu

Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) has reportedly made the stakes of his comeback clear: A defeat to Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) in Sydney this weekend would bring his career to an immediate end.

Ronnie Shields, working with Spence throughout the camp in Australia, said that Spence communicated that position early: “If I was to come out and lose, my career is over. I’m done. There’s no sense in me trying to push for what?”

Spence has been out of the ring for three years since Terence Crawford stopped him in the ninth round in July 2023. The return against Tszyu is not a bid for another world title. It is, by Shields’ own account, about leaving the sport on different terms than Crawford provided: “He just didn’t want to go out the way he went out.”

Even a win does not open an extended second act. Shields was measured about what a victory would actually mean for Spence’s future plans:” He may fight one, two, maybe, but no more than three fights. Even if he wins, he says, ‘You know what? That’s it. I’m satisfied with what I accomplished.’ If he loses, definitely that’s it. He’s doing this on his own terms. It’s not by anybody else’s terms.”
