Status Update On The Health Of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Father

A few weeks ago, the father of UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was hospitalized following complications from pneumonia. It led him to undergo open-heart surgery. Following further complications, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was in the hospital for an extended period of time. Now, it appears things are getting better for the elder Nurmagomedov.

ESPN is reporting that Abdulmanap’s condition has improved. Ali Abdelaziz, the manager of Khabib, discussed how everything is going. Abdulmanap was able to speak to his son and smile, a huge improvement.

“Khabib is very strong, his family is very strong and his father is very strong,” Abdelaziz stated. “He’s improving. He opened his eyes, responding a little bit — good sign. Allah is in control. We have faith he will be better, but at the end of the day, it’s completely up to his health whether it progresses or not. But he’s progressing, and we’re very happy about this.”

Khabib would end up stating that his father suffered from a case of COVID-19. He was one of 20 relatives to be affected by the pandemic that has taken over the world.

Abdulmanap, 58, has been by his son’s side since the start of his career. Khabib credits his father for training him to be disciplined. His influence has brought some of the top Russian fighters to MMA, with some of them winning major titles.

Khabib was supposed to face off against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 back in April. He decided to stay in Russia to quarantine, postponing the bout. As a result, Ferguson faced Justin Gaethje for the interim title in a bout that the latter easily won.

“I think Khabib’s father being sick has motivated him more,” Abdelaziz went on to say. “He’s training every day, two times a day. He’s in camp already. Me and him were talking and I said, ‘Hey, get your mind off, do what you need to do.’ He’s always training. He’s a true mixed martial artist. Same with Gaethje. They are both great guys and they want to fight. It’s a dream fight.”

There are now reports that Khabib will defend his title against Gaethje on “Fight Island” at UFC 253. The UFC has yet to confirm the matchup meant for September.
