Stephen Fulton Keeps Junior Featherweight Belts After Unanimous Decision Win Over Danny Roman
The WBC and WBO 122-pound world champion, Stephen Fulton Jr.(20-0, 8 KOs), dominated Danny Roman (29-4-1, 10 KOs) in a unanimous decision victory on Saturday. The fight was the main event of action live on SHOWTIME, and it was watched by a sold out crowd at The Armory in Minneapolis.
Fulton more than doubled Roman in connected punches, with a rate of 36.2% to 16.8%, according to CompuBox. Fulton also landed almost 46% of his power punches.
After the 12-round bout, all three judges agreed that Fulton was the clear winner, with his scores coming in as 120-108 twice and 119-109.
“I made a hell of a statement tonight,” Fulton said in the post fight interview with Showtime. “I prepared for this. I told y’all I was going to make it easy and fight depending on how I woke up. And I woke up feeling good.”
After his loss, Roman had nothing but respect for Fulton.
“I think this fight proves who the best 122-pound fighter in the division is. Fulton did that tonight,” he said. ”I wish him the best and I hope he goes and achieves what I couldn’t achieve. Go become undisputed. Like I said, this fight proved who is the best in the division. Fulton was the better man tonight.”
In his post fight interview with Showtime’s Brian Campbell, Fulton made it clear that for his next fight, his eyes are set on the 122-pound title fight against fellow unified champion, Murodjon Akhmadaliev.
“You already know what’s next,” said Fulton. “I want M.J. I got to finish this up. But much respect for Danny Roman. Much respect.”
