Stevenson Ready To Prove He’s Elite

On Saturday July 12th, Shakur Stevenson achieves a dream of his, as he headlines in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, as part of a Top Rank on ESPN card.

Stevenson, who wears a headband to the ring emblazoned with his hometown, will square off against Alberto Guevara, as he looks to remain undefeated.

“It means everything to me,” Stevenson said at a press conference on Thursday. “This was a dream of mine to come here to the Prudential Center and fight in front of the hometown, my home crowd, family, friends. I’m happy to be here, and it means everything to me.”

“I’m not overlooking him. Honestly, I’m not going to let you {Top Rank’s Crystina Poncher} put no pressure on me either. I feel like I’m going to go in there, box my fight and have fun. I’m going to let everything take care of itself.”

“We are extremely proud of Shakur Stevenson here in the city of Newark,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said during the conference. “I got an opportunity to see him with the young people yesterday. That was an incredible, incredible scene. You should’ve been there. The young people love him in this city. The city loves him. The kind of discipline, commitment to his craft – all of those things are amazing. Not just for him growing up from the city of Newark, but all of these young people get an opportunity to see what it takes to be a professional, what it takes to be a champion, to stand out and do the things that he’s doing.”

While this is a homecoming and potential coronation for Stevenson as a force at featherweight, the Olympic silver medalist will have to contended with a more experienced Guevara.

“I know Shakur is a tough fighter,” Guevara told the press on Thursday. “But I want to prove that I can do more in boxing. All of my experience will show on Saturday night.”

“I have a lot of experience as an amateur and a pro. My experience will be important in this fight.”
