Stevenson Slammed for ‘Excuses’ After Lackluster Bout With De Los Santos

Shakur Stevenson has been criticized for his comments following his win over Edwin De Los Santos, which made him the new WBC lightweight champion.

Stevenson won by a unanimous decision in a fight where there was very little action. Shakur appeared content to box on the back foot with his jab, while De Los Santos struggled to impose his will despite looking like the quicker and heavy-handed fighter. As a result, the crowd became restless, with boos echoing the arena. That continued in the aftermath when Stevenson exited the ring as the fighter made it clear that it was not his best performance.

Bob Arum attributed it to a shoulder injury that Stevenson had been carrying into the fight. Meanwhile, Stevenson refused to comment on any such injury by stating that he had no excuses. But that did not stop the boxing community from scrutinizing the performance. Both Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia were critical of the win, which has only gotten worse with Stevenson’s own explanation for his performance.

“I [don’t] feel that good bae, but if I gotta jump in my bag and get the win, I’m going to do that,” Stevenson

Nevertheless, if the WBC lightweight champion wants to get the biggest fights in the form of Haney and Gervonta Davis, then the performance will have to improve considerably. And this was the sentiment being expressed on social media.
