Stevenson’s Next Fight Rumored Against Abdullaev, Harutyunyan

Shakur Stevenson’s next fight on July 6 could be against Zaur Abdulaev or Artem Harutyunyan

Shakur will defend his WBC Lightweight Title, which we won via a unanimous decision against Edwin De Los Santos. Stevenson was booed during the fight for his tactics. He used his jab to neutralize De Los Santos, who failed to cut off the ring. The three-weight world champion blamed a hand injury for his cautious approach. Fights with Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney became less likely. Shakur damaged his leverage in the negotiations, as he became a high-risk, low-reward fight.

Haney called on Shakur to rematch De Los Santos to silence his critics. That is unlikely as Shakur prepares for his return. He had hoped to face William Zepeda, who called out Shakur following his win over Maxi Hughes. Zepeda is an undefeated Mexican with a 30-0 record, including 26 KOs. However, it looks like a choice between Abdulaev or Harutyunyan

Both names are not at the elite level. Despite being perceived as ‘pillow-fisted’ Haney knocked out Abdullaev in 2019. Harutyunyan is more well-known, having lost a close unanimous decision to Frank Martin in his last fight. But in the last round, Harutyunyan took a knee, allowing Martin to scrape a win with the judges: 114-113, 115-112 and 115-112. With one fight left on his Top Rank deal, Shakur has plenty to consider.
