Strawweight Champion Zhang Interested In A Clash With Namajunas
Following one of the best fights in MMA history, Zhang Weili is looking to continue to prove herself as a dominant UFC Strawweight Champion. Speaking with ESPN’s Ariel Helwnai, Zhang expressed a desire to fight another former champion in Rose Namajunas.
“I would fight anyone that the UFC offers to us,” Zhang stated, “but my preference is to fight Rose because I believe she is the highest-level and most-skilled martial artist outside of myself in the division.
“She would be a good challenge for me.”
Namajunas (8-4), ranked second in the UFC’s strawweight rankings, last fought in May 2019. After beating Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 217 for the Strawweight Title and in the rematch at UFC 223, “Thug Rose” went to Brazil to face Jessica Andrade. Winning the beginning of the fight, Andrade slammed Namajunas on her neck, winning the title via knockout.
Taking time off to heal, Namajuans was supposed to face Andrade in a rematch at the original UFC 249 on April 18. She had to take herself out of the bout following the death of two family members as a result of the coronavirus. It was another series of unfortunate events for Namajunas, who was scarred from Conor McGregor’s bus attack before UFC 223.
Zhang (21-1) ended up beating Andrade for the title back in August in China. She last fought in March at UFC 248, one of the last major events before the coronavirus took over. On that night, she fought Jedrzejczyk in a Fight of the Year candidate. An epic clash that went back and forth, Zhang won via split decision.
Currently quarantining in China, Zhang is waiting for her next fight. There are talks of a Joanna rematch, potentially on “Fight Island”, but nothing is for sure. The idea to face Namajunas just comes from the spirit of competition.
If the fight was to be made, it is unknown how much time Namajunas would need or when it would take place.
