Strickland Promises To Punish Costa – ‘I’m Going To Do It For Brazil’

Sean Strickland, the former UFC Middleweight Champion, is confident he will overpower Paulo Costa at UFC 302 on June 1.

Dana White announced the fight at the UFC 300 post-presser, saying it would feature on the Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier card. Strickland is looking to bounce back after losing a controversial split decision to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297 in January.

White was on record saying Strickland had done enough to win. Strickland had been chasing a rematch, but that was to no avail. The loss meant Strickland failed in his first title defense following his win over Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 last September.

Costa is a big underdog and on a poor run of form. He has three defeats in his last four bouts, losing to Robert Whittaker the last time out at UFC 298. It was a huge setback, having beaten Luke Rockhold at UFC 278 last September. Heading into the fight, Strickland fancied his chances.

“You know, you guys, I like Costa.  He’s a funny guy.  He makes me laugh.  He’s pro-free speech. I like that guy. But I’m going to make that dirty Brazilian bleed.  I’m going to do it for Brazil because Brazil doesn’t even like Costa.  So, hey, Brazil, this is for you guys.  Let’s get it done,” Strickland said
