Sugar Ray Leonard Records Upset Of The Decade Vs. Marvin Hagler – April 6, 1987 (This Day In Boxing History)

What not many boxing fans thought would happen – happened.

Thirty-five years ago today, Sugar Ray Leonard shocked the boxing world when defeated Marvelous Marvin Hagler via split decision for the right to become the new owner of his WBC middleweight title.

The Ring Magazine recognized the 1987 fight as Fight of the Year and Upset of the Year, later escalating it to Upset of the Decade.

Hagler had 12 successful defenses going into the fight while Leonard hadn’t fought in three years, and he hadn’t even fought at middleweight before.

But none of that seemed to matter to Leonard as he came into the fight dancing, moving and making Hagler lunge and miss. Leonard easily overtook the first four rounds, but Hagler began to get into the rhythm by seventh.

In the seventh round, Hagler caught Leonard with a hook that temporarily froze him. He sent Leonard to the ropes right before the sound of the bell.

But in the ninth round, Leonard released a flurry of punches that sent Hagler’s head snapping left and right.

Hagler retired later on.
