After a long wait the summer Olympics are finally here with a beautiful opening ceremony to kick off the games that was held yesterday. The boxing schedule is stacked with amazing talent from all round the world.
Day 1 started out with both featherweight and welterweight action in both men and women divisions. In the women’s featherweight division Sena Irie from Japan absolutely demolished Yamileth Solorzano from El Salvador. Karriss Artingstall from the UK crushed her competition of Keamogetse Sadie Kenosi from Botswana. Keep an eye out for this British bomber because she has plenty of potential.
Italy’s Irma Testa fared well against Russian boxer Liudmila Vorontsova and for the last two matches Nikolina Cacic from Croatia and Nesthy Petecio from the Philippines dominated their opponents from the US and Congo respectively.
The men’s welterweight matches were very dynamic with Eskerkhan Madiev from Georgia scoring a TKO finish against Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo from Azerbaijan in the second round. Two African boxers battled to see who would come out on top with Zambian boxer Stephen ZIMBA being awarded the victor.
US boxer Delante Johnson came out superior against his Argentinian opponent Brian Arregui and Indian boxer Vikas Krishan got absolutely slammed by his Japanese opponent Sewonrets Quincy Mensah Okazawa.
There was plenty of action in the men’s featherweight division. Duke Ragan of the United States defeated Samuel Kistohurry of France in a scrappy fight. Alexy Miguel de la Cruz Baez from the Dominican Republic put on a spectacular performance against Keevin Allicock from Guyana. He is scheduled to face Albert Batyrgaziev hailing out of Russian this Wednesday for the 16 round qualifiers.
Many exciting matches happened between boxers from different countries like Vietnam vs Azerbaijan with the former coming out on top. Argentina defeated Germany in a hectic back and forth battle and Erdenebat Tsendbaatar from Mongolia defeated Nick Okoth from Kenya.
Day 1 also had some spectacle matches from the men’s super-heavy weight and women’s welter weight divisions. Denis Latypov put on an outstanding performance in the early rounds but was no match for the destructive power and technique skill of Mahammad Abdullayev.
The match was between Bahrain and Azerbaijan with the latter coming out on top. Womens welter weight division saw Thailand and Poland being awared onsided decision victories against Russia and Uzbekistan repectively. It has been a stellar display of boxer over the first day.
