Taylor Wins Second Title, Crolla Retires With Win

It wasn’t an easy task, and some may not have agreed with the decision, but Katie Taylor is a two-weight champion, defeating Christina Linardatou to capture the WBO female super lightweight championship.

With the win, Taylor becomes just the third boxer from Ireland to win championships in two different weight classes.

Linardatou came out strong in the first round, pressuring Taylor, but Taylor found her footing and grove in the next round and began to push back. For the first half of the fight, Taylor, despite facing swelling on her eye early, always seemed to have an answer for whatever Linardatou threw at her.

Linardatou did trouble Taylor some around the eighth round, rocking and stumbling her before the bell. Taylor took a more defensive and cautious approach in the next two rounds.

Taylor’s early success and calculated fighting in the later rounds seemed to do just enough. While one judge scored the fight 94-94, the other two scored it for Taylor 97-93.

In the main event, Anthony Crolla bid farewell to boxing by scoring his own razor-thin, majority decision win over Frank Urquiaga. Urquiaga troubled Crolla in the starting four or five rounds, but fatigue may have gotten the better of him against the better-conditioned, more experienced Crolla. He still put up a gutted effort against Crolla, but it wasn’t enough in the eyes of the judges. While one judge scored the bout 95-95, the other two scored it in Crolla’s favor 97-93 and 98-92.
