Teixeira: Jones Should Be Suspended For A Year
When one person affects an entire division, it is expected those members will be upset. Glover Teixeira is one of the latest fighters to call out Jon Jones following his latest arrest for DWI.
Jones (26-1, 1NC) was arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a weapon (gun in his possession) and possession of an open container. He pled guilty and agreed to be placed under a type of house arrest. The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion will also reportedly be required to complete community service, as well as paying hefty fines. This is just for the DWI. There appears to be no punishment coming by the UFC.
When it comes to the UFC stepping in, Teixeira (30-7) believes something should be done. Speaking with AG Fight, Teixeira believes that Jones should be out for a long period of time.
“For me, he was gone for a year,” Teixeira stated. “I have to look at things from my side, he is already champion, he is well financially. Other than that, the queue moves faster. I don’t twist anything against him outside the octagon. Jon Jones f *cked up and it’s not the first time, but it’s hard to judge. I just hope he learns from it and doesn’t f*ck up anymore. It’s annoying. A friend showed the video of him crying at the end. I was sad about that, who doesn’t make mistakes?
“I’ve had a couple of beers and went out driving before, but I was not hammered like he was. He had a bottle of tequila and a gun with him. He had to rely on his luck. I don’t know if he’s overconfident, but he has done that many times before. It gives an impression he does that all the time. If I f*cked up like that, I would be punished, for sure. The UFC has to do the right thing.”
This is not the first time Jones has been involved with the law. In 2012, Jones was arrested and plead guilty of a DUI after driving into a pole in Binghamton. In 2015, Jones was involved in a hit-and-run after driving through a red light and crashing into two cars, one of them holding a pregnant woman. He pleaded guilty to that as well. This past July, Jones was charged with battery that involved a cocktail waitress at a strip club. He pleaded no-contest.
Teixeira joins Thiago Santos as someone requesting something be done. Santos has suggested he and Dominick Reyes fight over the title and Jones be stripped.
Ranked eighth in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings, Teixeira is currently on a three-fight win streak. He has seen Jones be stripped of the title multiple times, but it is unknown if something of that nature will be done as a result of recent events.
