Tensions Flare Between Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal At UFC 272 Press Conference

It seems the Colby Covington-Jorge Masvidal rivalry will continue to burn into Saturday.

Covington (16-3) and Masvidal (35-15) were already jawing at each other without a question being asked during the UFC 272 pre-fight press conference on Thursday.

“You ain’t gonna do s–, bro,” Masvidal shouted at Covington.

“Stop acting tough.”

“You’re such a f— bum,” Covington said.

“This is going to be easy work.”

Thursday was the first time the two welterweights went face-to-face ahead of their non-title main event fight on Saturday.

But the tensions weren’t always this heated.

Covington and Masvidal used to be roommates and friends when they were both part of American Top Team. But Masvidal said he began to distance himself from Covington before leaving the gym.

“I would see signs in the way he treated his family, the way he talked about his sister, the way he talked about his mom. There’s three sides to every story: there’s yours, theirs, and the truth,” Masvidal previously told MMA Junkie.

Both he and Covington lost their previous outings to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and are vying for another title shot.

During the face-off on Thursday, UFC President Dana White somehow managed to keep the two separated while Covington tried provoking Masvidal to come at him. Masvidal was able to throw a small kick; Covington mainly stood smiling.

The two will meet one more time on Friday for the official weigh-in.

Ahead of the fight, Masvidal signed an extension that would make him one of the top-five highest-paid fighters in the UFC, Masvidal’s co-agent Malki Kawa said.
