Teo Barely Escapes With Title In Decision Victory Over Ortiz

Live from the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Teofimo Lopez has retained his WBO and Lineal Junior Welterweight titles over a very competitive opponent in Jamaine Ortiz.

Despite a sound defensive strategy from the corner of Ortiz, Lopez was able to do just enough to earn the victory in a closely contested, and some say arguable, judges’ decision. Though, with Lopez listed as a seven to one favorite to win, the majority of the boxing community expected this to be a much more one-sided affair.

While Lopez walked away with the victory, this bout is widely being looked at as a lackluster offensive performance from both sides. However, through luring Lopez in and flashing the jab, while backpedaling for a large portion of the match, Ortiz almost managed to steal the fight. Additionally, he exposed several holes in the 2016 Olympian’s game, forced him into mistake-prone positions, but ultimately could not make him pay for the mistakes.

Lopez was clearly having difficulty getting inside and looking for the big shots that would guarantee victory, but he did have notable moments of success in multiple rounds. In the fourth, after analyzing Ortiz’s lateral movements, “The Takeover” seemed to begin to find his timing in a more effective manner, and started catching his opponent as he circled out of the pocket.

In the end, Lopez was unable to secure the highlight real finish that many had hoped for, but he would still earn this victory in this challenging and frustrating stylistic matchup.

During his post fight interview, he went on to call out Teofimo Lopez, and even engaged in some verbal warfare with the headliner following the main event.
