Teofimo Lopez insists that Floyd Mayweather doesn’t want Gervonta Davis to fight him.
Many believe that Lopez is the king of the lightweight division. He holds most, if not all of the major gold depending on who you ask. He is the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, The Ring, and the WBC (Franchise) Champion. The big holdup to some in labeling him the undisputed champion is the fact that Devin Haney holds the standard WBC Title.
While Haney’s WBC gold holds more weight to some than Davis’ WBA (Regular) Championship, many believe that “Tank” is the bigger star and a fight with Lopez could have more drawing potential. “The Takeover” has revealed that he wanted the fight but it isn’t going to happen.
Davis fights under PBC on Showtime and Mayweather Promotions. Speaking to BoxingScene.com, Lopez claimed that Mayweather won’t allow Davis to fight him.
“[George] Kambosos should be next for me. But if Kambosos and Australia doesn’t happen for whatever reason, we’re shooting for Devin Haney, Ryan García… we’re not shooting at Tank [Gervonta Davis, who holds titles at 130- and 135-pounds]. We asked Floyd [Mayweather, Davis’ promoter], Floyd said no to the fight. So, we said, ‘Alright, we’ll go for the other guys.’”
Lopez has seemingly set his sights on Haney. He even attended the Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith event, which was promoted by Matchroom Boxing. Lopez continuously shouted at Eddie Hearn to make him an offer to fight Haney.
Meanwhile for Davis, he’s being targeted by newly-minted interim WBC Lightweight Champion Ryan Garcia. The two traded barbs over the phone during an edition of Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson.
