Teofimo Lopez Claims George Kambosos Fight May Fall Through, Kambosos Responds

Teofimo Lopez claims talks to fight his mandatory challenger may fall through but George Kambosos wants to pump the brakes on that claim.

Lopez is the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, The Ring, and WBC (Franchise) Lightweight Champion. Kambosos is the mandatory IBF Title challenger. While Lopez has said he’d fight Kambosos, it isn’t his top priority. That distinction goes to the standard WBC Champion Devin Haney.

During a recent edition of SiriusXM and DAZN Boxing’s The Ak & Barak Show, Lopez claimed that negotiations to fight Kambosos appear to be crumbling.

“We’re talking about it right now. Is it a fight that I want? No. Who I want is Devin. So I told them if things go south with Kambosos, which it may look like that’s probably what’s gonna happen, I already spoke with my manager and Bob. So what we talked about is that if this doesn’t go through, the next guy I want is Devin. He’ll be getting something, we’re already gonna be talking to Eddie Hearn about it as well.”

Kambosos hopped on Twitter and delivered a swift response to “The Takeover.”

“Fake news.”

Lopez has been targeting Haney due to a war of words between the two. Haney has said that Lopez can’t call himself the undisputed champion at lightweight if he doesn’t fight him. Lopez has labeled Haney an “email champion.” Lopez even admitted that Haney is “pissing me off.”

Kambosos is hoping that he doesn’t end up being the forgotten contender. Like Lopez and Haney, Kambosos has gone perfect in his pro boxing career with a record of 19-0. Some fans have been wary of the fact that in his last two outings, Kambosos edged out victories via split decision.
