Teofimo Lopez, George Kambosos Jr. and IBF Sticks With October 4, Triller Stands Down

After IBF, Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. said no to Triller Fight Club’s plan of moving the scheduled October 4 fight date, Triller is forced to back down.

The firm grounding against Triller comes after Ryan Kavanaugh revealed his hopes of moving the lineal WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight championship between Lopez and Kambosos Jr. to avoid the Oakland Raiders versus San Diego Chargers Monday Night Football game.

“We expect no additional postponements and the fight to take place on October 4, 2021 as per the contracts,” Linda Torres, lead counsel for the IBF informed the attorneys via official letter obtained by Boxing Scene. “Mr. Kambosos has clearly expressed that he is unwilling to fly around the world until Triller has complied with its obligations to provide a plan to get him home in a reasonable time and manner.

“Given that Mr. Kambosos is scheduled to depart Australia on September 25, the IBF agrees that Triller must fulfill its obligations to secure round-trip travel no later than September 23, 2021. Mr. Kambosos should be able to undertake his final preparations for the fight knowing that plans have been confirmed to get him home after the event,” the letter continued.

Kavanaugh, of Triller, told Ariel Helwani on MMA Hour that he “just realized” the potential conflict with the NFL game.

Lopez and Kambosos’ teams immediately issued statements saying they did not agree with the seventh-potential move, Dan Rafael reported.

Lopez went on Morning Kombat and said he’s never experienced this before in his boxing career, saying “this is not the way to do certain things especially with an athlete like myself.”

Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) earned the IBF title in a second-round knockout of Richard Commey in 2019. He added on the WBA and WBO belts after outpointing Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Kambosos (19-0, 10 KOs) became the official challenger to the IBF belt after a twelve-round decision victory over Lee Selby last Halloween.

The two will meet on October 4 at the Hulu Theater in New York – if Triller has no more plans.
