Teofimo Lopez: ‘I Believe Top Five Is Where I Belong’
Teofimo Lopez feels he has earned his spot in the top five pound-for-pound list.
Lopez is riding a wave of momentum in the world of boxing. He is the current WBA (Super), IBF, WBC (Franchise), and WBO Lightweight Champion. “The Takeover” was already the IBF Champion but to get the other titles, Lopez had to defeat Vasiliy Lomachenko, who was at the top of many pound-for-pound lists. Lopez earned the unanimous decision victory back in October.
Lopez spoke to talkSPORT and shared his belief on where he should be placed in boxing’s pound-for-pound list.
“It’s amazing. I believe top five is where I belong. One thing I don’t like is that it’s me and Loma next to each other. I’m like, ‘Ugh, nah, kick him out.’ In reality though, it’s crazy just to see your name on there. To see that out of many, many fighters in the world, and you’re in the top five. It goes to show me that we’re doing something big. I’m very happy and I’m very appreciative of those who have acknowledged me for all the hard work and all the stuff that we have done.”
Lopez improved his perfect pro boxing record to 16-0. He is currently recovering from surgery on his right foot after suffering ligament damage. Lopez has a couple of more weeks to go before he can start fully rehabbing. Time will tell when he can return to the boxing ring. Initially, Lopez’s team was hoping for a spring return. Whether or not that’s still in the cards remains to be seen.
