Teofimo Lopez Puts Lightweights On Notice
The owner of four major world titles at lightweight, Teofimo Lopez, is putting his division on notice.
Lopez is riding high following his massive victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko on October 17. “The Takeover” was also the IBF Champion going into the fight. With his unanimous decision victory over “Loma,” Lopez also snagged the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), and WBO gold.
There is a bevy of high-level lightweights such as Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia who could give Lopez a run for his money. Speaking to Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell of Morning Kombat, Lopez sent a message to the 135-pound division (h/t BoxingScene.com).
“135, you have the likes of these guys. And, I’m the king of it all. What can they bring to the table? Really, what can they bring to the table for me to make [a fight between us]. I bring a lot to the table, you know?
“I want to make fights happen. I want to make big fights happen. It’s all about who is going to be that top dog to make those fights happen? Such a big fight that people are just drooling to see. We have a lot of potential fights.”
Many believe Lopez has now put himself in prime position to become a star in the sport of boxing. Of course, there are his skills inside the ring, but Lopez also exudes confidence that has drawn the attention of many fight fans. His father has also served as his personal hype man, along with building himself as a respectable trainer.
As far as Lopez’s potential future opposition is concerned, Davis just retained his WBA (Regular) Lightweight gold, along with snagging the WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight Title. Haney is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Yuriorkis Gamboa to retain his WBC Lightweight Championship. Garcia will take on Luke Campbell for the interim WBC Lightweight Title on December 5.
