IBF Lightweight Champion Teofimo Lopez is firing back at Vasiliy Lomachenko’s manager.
Lopez hasn’t been shy in hurling barbs Lomachenko’s way. The two are scheduled for a title unification showdown on October 17. Not only will Lopez be putting his IBF gold on the line, but he’ll be gunning for Lomachenko’s WBA (Super) and WBO Titles.
During an edition of Top Rank Boxing’s Blood, Sweat, and Tears series, Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, shared a theory that Lopez’s beef with Lomachenko stems from jealousy. During a Zoom call with reporters, Lopez responded to Klimas.
“Why is he speaking for Loma? But let me get to that. Look, it’s not jealousy. It’s nothing against the man in that aspect. He’s trying to be great just as much as I’m trying to be great. So it’s like, I don’t have no jealousy over that. I don’t wish no man [ill will], when they’re in the spotlight let them enjoy it, let them have it. I’ve never been the type to hate on someone or be jealous. But moving forward, I have my reasons and I’ve seen the way Vasiliy Lomachenko may carry himself outside of the sport. And I got to witness that personally due to the fact that me as well as a professional athlete, I’m able to see behind the scenes and I just never liked him.”
Lopez went on to say that he’s eager to share the ring with Lomachenko to settle their bad blood.
“I don’t like the way things have been carried upon with him and how he approaches things. That’s why I think that come October 17, I can’t wait to put hands on this man. I’m sorry Bob, I know that’s your guy but he ain’t gonna be your guy after this.”
