Teofimo Lopez’s Manager Targets March 2021 Return At The Latest
Teofimo Lopez’s manager wants his fighter back inside the ring no later than early spring 2021.
Lopez is riding on a high after stunning the world with his unanimous decision win over Vasiliy Lomachenko. Lopez lived up to his nickname, “The Takeover” as he captured the WBA (Super), WBC (Franchise), IBF, and WBO Lightweight Titles. The only major lightweight title he doesn’t have is Devin Haney’s gold.
The manager of Lopez, David McWater, said he doesn’t envision Lopez facing Lomachenko a second time (via Bad Left Hook).
“I can’t imagine a rematch. Older guy never wins a rematch. If they fight again Teofimo would hurt him badly! Plus, he added, “I don’t think Loma brings enough viewers to the table to pay both guys.”
McWater did say that Lopez plans to get back inside the ring no later than March 2021.
“I can tell you exactly what he would say: ‘I’m a fighter I need to fight,’” McWater said. “He’s not going to take long layoffs if he can help it. March 2021 at the latest!”
In addition, McWater also discussed the possibility of Lopez fighting for gold at 140 pounds. McWater expressed his belief that a move up in weight would only make sense if Lopez gets a shot at the winner of Jose Ramirez vs. Josh Taylor.
Lopez has been mulling over his next move. He appeared adamant about wanting to go after all the major championships at 140 pounds. Along the way, he ripped Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis over their upcoming matchups. Haney will meet Yuriorkis Gamboa on November 7, while Davis collides with Leo Santa Cruz on October 31.
