Terence Crawford Confident Manny Pacquiao Fight Will Happen
Talks have been heating up between the camps of Terence Crawford and Manny Pacquiao. A bout Crawford, WBO Welterweight Champion, has been craving for, there may be some kinks to figure out. However, “Bud” is confident the fight will get done.
Speaking on “The Ak And Barak Show”, Crawford (36-0) talked about the idea of him clashing with the future Hall of Famer in Pacquiao (62-7-2). While Pacquiao has remained somewhat silent on the matter, there appears to be some interest. That is something that Crawford will take and work with.
“We’ve been in contact with Bob [Arum], and Manny and them,” Crawford stated, via Boxing Scene. “They want the fight. We want the fight. So basically, we’re trying to figure out the money situation. You know, with this pandemic going on right now, it’s kinda hard to put on a big fight and no audience, and not knowing how you’re gonna get your return back. So, you know, we’ve gotta figure out all the details with that first before we can do that.”
Top Rank’s Bob Arum recently stated that a fight between the two could take place in 2021. Boxing is ready to start up again, with events taking place in Las Vegas starting on June 9. Outside of the United States, Arum is hoping a fight between Pacquiao and Crawford can happen in an area not affected by the coronavirus. The need for revenue is important for the growth of the sport and of Crawford.
Making his professional debut in 2008, Crawford would win the WBO-NABO Lightweight Title in his 21st fight, beating Alejandro Sanabria via TKO in 2013. Two fights later, he beat Ricky Burns via unanimous decision to win the WBO Lightweight Title. Moving in weight, he won light-welterweight gold, eventually becoming the WBC, WBO, WBA, and IBF Light-Welterweight Champion. In 2018, Crawford beat Jeff Horn via TKO for the WBO Welterweight Title, something he has defended three times since.
The 32-year-old’s last bout was a TKO-win over Egidijus Kavaliauskas back in December. There has been criticism of his development, as many believe he needs to be challenged. Despite the coronavirus, Crawford is thinking about how the fight could help him when it comes to his future.
“If that fight presents itself, it’s gonna be more money than I ever made in my career to date, probably,” Crawford went on to say. “You know, so I think that fight can get made, worked out however it will be. You know, but at the same time, you know, he’s dealing with the same issues that I’m dealing with. Every top fighter is dealing with the same issue. You know, it’s not like I’m the only one dealing with this.”
Pacquiao (62-7-2) is on a three-fight win streak and is 5-1 in his last six fights. He last fought in July 2019, beating Keith Thurman via split decision to win the WBA Welterweight Title. If he isn’t available, Crawford has shown interest in fighting Errol Spence Jr.
