The Friday Five: October 11th, 2019

1.  Tyson Fury and Cain Velasquez To Compete In WWE.

In the past seven days, former UFC heavyweight champion and current lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury made in-ring appearances on WWE programming, now the two combat sports stars will actually compete for the company this October.

On Friday, the WWE announced at a press conference in Las Vegas that the two men will travel to Saudi Arabia on October 31st to compete on the WWE’s Crown Jewel card, an annual event held in association with the Saudi government.

Velasquez, who has competed for Lucha Libre AAA twice this year, will face off against the man he beat for the UFC heavyweight title, Brock Lesnar, while Fury will fight popular wrestler Braun Strowman in a battle of two larger than life personalities.

2. Spong’s Pet Cougar Escapes From Home.

Tyrone Spong has had a hell of a week and not in a great way, as the fighter lost out on a major fight and now a report that his pet cougar… That’s right a pet cougar, escaped from his home earlier this year.

The kickboxer turned pugilist, was pulled from his fight scheduled for October 12th against former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, but tested positive for a drug prescribed for female birth control.

On top of that, Spong’s pet cougar, yes, an actual cougar, escaped from his Florida home, leading to state prosecutors filing 23 criminal charges against Spong.

During a conference call on Thursday, Canelo Alvarez was asked what he thinks of fellow middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade, and well… It wasn’t a sparkling endorsement.

“The truth is he hasn’t fought with anyone, hasn’t fought against anyone, and he’s also boring, very boring,” Alvarez bluntly told reporters of the WBO champion.

“Maybe he’s a good fighter, but he’s a boring fighter, and at the end of the day, when there’s a boring fight, people are going to blame me. I like fights where there’s action, where people can enjoy a good show. That’s very important for me. But also he doesn’t represent a challenge for me, as well, because he hasn’t fought against anybody.”

Andrade, not one to take comments like that lying down, clapped back at Alvarez on his twitter.

@Canelo Stop talking out ya ass…If u don’t believe I’m a challenge u would have unified w/ me in September for undisputed! Get @OscarDeLaHoya panties off and grow some cajones! You can’t 🦆forever..Put ya big boy gloves on and fight me!

While Canelo Alvarez is preparing to move up to light heavyweight on November 2nd against Sergey Kovalev, he still has a keen eye on the middleweight division, especially on his rival Gennadiy Golovkin.

When asked about having the IBF middleweight title stripped from him after failed negotiations with Sergey Derevyanchenko, Alvarez was resigned to what went down.

“What happened is what happened,” Alvarez said of the situation, which later saw Golovkin fight Derevyanchenko in his place on October 5th. “Unfortunately, I had to give up my title, it wasn’t what I wanted but it’s ultimately what transpired.”

“To me, Sergiy Derevyanchenko clearly won the fight,” Alvarez said of the fight that aired on DAZN. “I gave everyone the (blueprint) to beat him and that’s hurting him to the body. That is wha we saw take place on Saturday.”

5. McGregor Returns To Court.

Six months after Conor McGregor punched a man in the face inside a Dublin pub, the former UFC double champion stood in Dublin District Court.

McGregor’s legal team requested that the case be postponed until November 1st, which was allowed by the court, where if found guilty the Crumlin native could spend a maximum of six-months in jail, a €1,500 fine, or both

“In reality it doesn’t matter what happened here. I was in the wrong,” McGregor told Ariel Helwani after the tape was released.
