The Korean Zombie Rises…Again

There already have been two recent failed comeback attempts in the UFC. After over a year away from the Octagon, Ronda Rousey was obliterated by Amanda Nunes. A few weeks ago, in his first bout in two and a half years, B.J. Penn was soundly defeated by Yair Rodriguez.

So with "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung competing in his first bout in three and a half years at UFC Fight Night: Houston, held at the Toyota Center, there were some who felt Jung would struggle greatly, and possibly lose, his UFC return. But this tweet sums it all up:

Jung needed just 2:49 to score a huge knockout victory over Dennis Bermudez, who came into this main event bout ranked No. 9 in the UFC’s featherweight rankings. Bermudez rocked Jung a bit early on in the fight, but then Jung, in his vintage self that earned him his nickname, walked Bermudez down as Bermudez threw more shots. All Jung needed was to find one opening, and when he did he landed a hard uppercut right onto the jaw of Bermudez, knocking him out cold.

This was Jung’s first fight since losing his featherweight title shot against Jose Aldo in August 2013. Following this bout, Jung dealt with injuries, as well as a required two-year military service. Before the loss to Aldo, his only in the UFC, Jung rose through the ranks thanks to having the only twister submission in MMA history in his promotional debut, a seven-second KO win and an epic Fight of the Year against Dustin Poirier in 2012.

Elsewhere on the main card, Felice Herrig scored a unanimous decision win over Alexa Grasso, snapping Grasso’s nine-fight undefeated streak. James Vick scored a third-round submission win over Abel Trujillo, while Ovince Saint Preux lost a controversial split decision to UFC newcomer Volkan Oezdemir, who took the fight on weeks notice. This was Saint Preux’s third straight defeat.

Marcel Fortuna had a highlight reel KO victory over Anthony Hamilton.

And while the scorecards did not necessarily reflect it, Jessica Andrade and Angela Hill, in Hill’s first fight back in the UFC after spending time in Invicta, went at it in an all-out war, with both fighters throwing and landing their own hard shots, including one particular slugfest in the third round.
