The Rock Begins MMA Training For His ‘Smashing Machine’ Movie Role

Dwayne Johnson, otherwise known as The Rock, has begun his MMA training for his upcoming film ‘Smashing Machine.’

Johnson plays the ex-UFC and PRIDE fighter Mark Kerr. Kerr was a Pride FC Heavyweight Champion and a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion. The film will focus on Kerr’s addiction issues, looking at his dependence on painkillers and narcotics. Benny Safdie will direct the movie.

“I’m proud to say that myself and Seven Bucks Productions are going to make a film about the life of one of your founding fathers, the pioneering founding fathers, ‘The Smashing Machine’ Mark Kerr. Mark Kerr’s story is such an incredible story. Here’s a guy who won the two-time heavyweight tournament in the early stages of UFC, and here’s a guy who also went over to PRIDE, (and) he had this incredible run. As many of these warriors have, and I wanted to shine a spotlight on this man,” Johnson said

Johnson is a big fan of combat sports. He presented Jorge Masvidal with the BMF Belt at UFC 244 after Gamebread beat Nate Diaz to secure the title. While Johnson was linked with becoming an MMA fighter, he pursued wrestling instead. The decision paid off, as he became a ten-time world champion. The Rock is ready to leave his mark on MMA through this movie. The following footage shows Johnson sparring and grappling as he gets into shape.
