White: Woodley-Wonderboy Rematch Will Happen
Dana White in a post fight interview Saturday night has broken one of his self proclaimed rules when he said that Woodley vs Thompson deserves to be run back. The UFC president was quoted saying "You rematch it. It was a draw". This was a highly contested championship bout and although White usually avoids announcing matchups on the night of a card, a majority draw needs a rematch.
"The fight was ridiculous. It was the ‘Fight of the Night.’ Do it again." said White and he could not have said it any better. The fight had everything, knockdowns, submission attempts and was fought at a true championship pace. It was a back and forth affair that had each fighter taking control of the fight at times but neither fighter was able to assert his dominance in two of the three judge’s eyes.
While it is sure to make fight fans happy, a rematch between Woodley and Thompson sort of puts the welterweight division on hold. Top contenders like Demian Maia and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone who aren’t getting any younger and have a lot of miles on them are going to have to sit on the sidelines and see how this rematch plays out.
"That one makes sense. I think it makes sense," White said on Saturday night and rightly so. It sure does make sense. Unfinished business remains between champion and challenger and there is only one way to settle unfinished business, inside an octagon. UFC 209 at the Barclays in Brooklyn sounds like a good place to watch this rematch go down.
