This Day In Boxing History July 2 1921- 1st Million Dollar Gate

On this date, July 2, 1921 1921: Jack Dempsey knocks out Georges Carpentier in the 4th round at Boyle’s Thirty Acres  Jersey City, NJ.  Dempsey retained the world heavyweight title. The fight also made a first in history by being the first million dollar gate for a boxing match. Over 80,000 people attended the fight.

The Ring Jack Dempsey and George Carpentier fought on Montgomery Street in Jersey City. The venue took a year to build.
