This is how Vasily Lomachenko can secure Teofimo Lopez rematch
Top Rank head Bob Arum is eager to see Vasily Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KOs) in the ring against a familiar foe if he can overwhelm Masayoshi Nakatani tomorrow night. All Lomachenko has to do to get a potential outing against multi-belt lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) again is put on a stellar performance in his next fight.
Lomachenko went toe-to-toe with Lopez last October but lost via unanimous decision with scores of 116–112, 119–109 and 117–111. After losing his WBA, WBC Franchise & WBO 135-lb belts, the 33-year-old Ukrainian pro has since been eyeing revenge against Lopez.
On the other hand, Lopez is set to face George Kambosos Jr (19-0) on August 14. It is fair to say that the Takeover has not faced a fighter of such aura before, especially after angering Kambosos with his breaching of COVID-19 protocols that postponed their fight.
Given that Lopez hands Kambosos his first loss and Loma strolls past his Japanese counterpart, a rematch between both winners will be on the cards.
Although, the Takeover is not in favor of facing the Matrix again. In a January interview, he said: “[Lomachenko] didn’t want to put a rematch clause in our contract. There are lots of other things that I can get real dirty into but I’m not. I’m gonna look the other way. I’m looking for bigger and better things.”
