This Is Why Khabib Nurmagomedov Thinks Francis Ngannou Should Box Tyson Fury
Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is all for the crossover fight between Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury, but mainly for one reason.
Nurmagomedov said Ngannou, UFC’s heavyweight champion, is bound to make millions from the rumored fight against Fury, boxing heavyweight champion. And for that, Nurmagomedov said it’d definitely be worth it.
“If they fight in the UFC yeah, Fury doesn’t have too many chances,” Nurmagomedov said. “But in boxing, I don’t see anyone even touching his face—maybe Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk is going to be a tough challenge for Fury. But Ngannou? I think he has to stay with the UFC. But if he goes to boxing and he’s making 50 or 60 million dollars— he has to. Why not?
“I know Ngannou comes from a very, very poor life in Africa. He was with no money, no home, nothing. So if someone pays you more money then go and take.”
Nurmagomedov reportedly had a similar opportunity. He was offered $100 million to box boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, but he turned it down.
He retired in 2020 after successfully defending his title against Justin Gaethje.
Ngannou, meanwhile, is coming off a unanimous decision win over interim champion Ciryl Gane. He was paid $600,000 and reportedly took half of that in cryptocurrency.
Ngannou has been at a roadblock with the UFC because he wants a new contract that includes a bigger payout and an option to box. Since he won against Gane, he remains under contract for either three fights or one year.
The Cameroonian fighter – along with many others – has been vocal about fighter pay in the UFC.
Fury, meanwhile, bagged a guaranteed $30 million in his last fight against Deontay Wilder. He won via knockout.
The only UFC fighter to crossover into boxing was Conor McGregor who received a lucrative payout in his loss to Mayweather in 2017.
