Thurman Vows to Knock Garcia Out

While Danny Garcia picked apart tune-up Samuel Vargas on Saturday night, his next opponent sat ringside and watched his every move. Keith Thurman will fight Garcia in a highly-anticipated welterweight unification bout in March, and he is already breaking down the flaws in his next foe’s game.

While Garcia called out Thurman after the fight, leading to a tense face-off between the two, Thurman believes that "Swift" is all-talk.

"Danny can talk whatever he wants and Angel Garcia can say whatever he wants," Thurman said after the fight, per WorldBoxingNews. "They can talk smack all day. Danny is real flat-footed. I believe I’ll be able to be on the outside, see the wide punches and counter punch.

"They said he wanted a tune-up, and now he’s ready to see me."

The matchup between Garcia (33-0) and Vargas had been criticized from its inception, as it was a clear mismatch that delayed the Garcia vs. Thurman fight, which was the obvious fight that fans wanted to see. With a victory, Garcia can put the criticism from fans behind him as he prepares for the unification bout.

The fight, which is scheduled for March 4, looks to be one of the best fights of 2017. Thurman, coming off a Fight of the Year candidate vs. Shawn Porter, and Garcia are both heavy-hitters with elite boxing skills.

"You have two big punches meeting on March 4," Thurman said. "I don’t see how the fight can go 12 rounds. I see myself as the best competition that Danny has ever faced."

In an interview with after the Garcia-Vargas fight, Thurman detailed his plans to live up to his "One-Time" nickname and knock Garcia out.

"Danny Garcia, he looks big, he looks strong. But y’all are not in this profession, you’re looking at it from the outside. From a real welterweight standpoint, he ain’t nothing but a light dude trying to move up. He’s got his daddy puffing him up. He’s going to be the third daddy’s boy that I’m going to get out of there."

A win over Garcia would provide Thurman with the statement victory he needs to propel himself higher on the list of today’s boxing greats. And for Garcia, this fight represents the opportunity for validation, for proving that he is not the cherry-picker some fans accuse him of being, for taking Thurman’s momentum and making it his own. It is one of the most fascinating matchups of 2017.
